Bounded rationality and animal spirits: a fluctuation-response approach to Slutsky matrices

چکیده

The Slutsky equation, central in consumer choice theory, is derived from the usual hypotheses underlying most standard models Economics, such as full rationality, homogeneity, and absence of interactions. We present a statistical physics framework that allows us to relax assumptions. first derive general fluctuation-response formula relates matrix spontaneous fluctuations consumption rather than response changing prices budget. then show that, within our hypotheses, symmetry remains valid even when agents are only boundedly rational but non-interacting. propose model where influenced by others, leading phase transition beyond which dominated herding (or `"fashion") effects. In this case, individual no longer symmetric, for fully agents. vicinity features peak asymmetry.

An Approach to Bounded Rationality

A central question in game theory, learning, and other elds is how a rational intelligent agent should behave in a complex environment, given that it cannot perform unbounded computations. We study strategic aspects of this question by formulating a simple model of a game with additional costs (computational or otherwise) for each strategy. While a zero-sum game with strategy costs is no longer...

A brief introduction to quaternion matrices and linear algebra and on bounded groups of quaternion matrices

The division algebra of real quaternions, as the only noncommutative normed division real algebra up to isomorphism of normed algebras, is of great importance. In this note, first we present a brief introduction to quaternion matrices and quaternion linear algebra. This, among other things, will help us present the counterpart of a theorem of Herman Auerbach in the setting of quaternions. More ...

Slutsky matrix norms: The size, classification, and comparative statics of bounded rationality

Given any observed demand behavior by means of a demand function, we quantify by how much it departs from rationality. The measure of the gap is the smallest Frobenius norm of the correcting matrix function that would yield a Slutsky matrix with its standard rationality properties (symmetry, singularity, and negative semidefiniteness). A useful classification of departures from rationality is s...

A Non-Bayesian Approach to (Un)Bounded Rationality

Can one define and test the hypothesis of (un)bounded rationality in stochastic choice tasks without endorsing Bayesianism? Similar to the state specificity of assets, we rely on state-specific goal formation. In a given choice task, the list of state-specific goal levels is optimal if one cannot increase the goal level for one state without having to decrease that for other states. We show tha...

A Bounded Rationality Approach to β, δ Preferences

Borrowing from Cognitive Heierarchy Theory, I introduce bounded rationality into the β, δ model of present-biased preferences. I define a level-two agent—or “k-2– sophisticate”—as one who is aware that her future selves will have present-bias, but believes that they will be naive. The k-2–sophisticate does one round of strategic thinking about her future behavior instead of the unlimited number...
